Zooming in on the Coma Cluster with Chandra: Compressed Warm Gas in the Brightest Cluster Galaxies

چکیده

The Chandra image of the central region of the Coma cluster reveals that both its dominant galaxies, NGC 4874 and NGC 4889, retain the central parts of their X-ray gas coronae. The interstellar gas with a temperature of 1– 2 keV is confined by the hot intergalactic medium of the Coma cluster into compact clouds (only 3 kpc in radius) containing 108 M⊙ of gas. The physical state of the gas in these clouds appears to be determined by a delicate balance between the radiative cooling and suppressed (by a factor of 30–100) heat conduction through the interface between these clouds and the hot cluster gas. Subject headings: galaxies: clusters: general — galaxies: clusters: individual (Coma) — magnetic fields — X-rays: galaxies — galaxies: individual (NGC 4874) — galaxies: individual (NGC 4889)

Chandra Observations of A2670 and A2107: A Comet Galaxy and cDs with Large Peculiar Velocities

We present an analysis of Chandra observations of the galaxy clusters A2670 and A2107. Their cD galaxies have large peculiar velocities (> 200 km s) and thus the clusters appear to be undergoing mergers. In A2670, we find a comet-like structure around one of the brightest galaxies. At the leading edge of the structure, there is a cold front. The mass of the X-ray gas in the comet-like structure...

A Large Mass of H2 in the Brightest Cluster Galaxy in Zwicky

We present the Spitzer/IRS mid-infrared spectrum of the infrared-luminous ( ) brightest 11 L p 4 # 10 L IR , cluster galaxy (BCG) in the X-ray–luminous cluster Zwicky 3146 (Z3146; ). The spectrum shows strong z p 0.29 aromatic emission features, indicating that the dominant source of the infrared luminosity is star formation. The most striking feature of the spectrum, however, is the exceptiona...

The multiphase nature of the intra – cluster medium of some clusters of galaxies

The discovery of EUV and soft X–ray excess emission in clusters of galaxies (the cluster soft–excess phenomenon) challenged the notion of the hot (∼ 10 K) gas as the only dominant thermal component of the intracluster medium (ICM). The spatial analysis of ROSAT PSPC 1/4 keV images presented here reveals compelling evidence for substantial amounts of cold gas (HI) in the ICM of the Coma and Virg...

An X-ray Temperature Map of Coma

The Coma cluster of galaxies was long considered to be the archtype of a relaxed virialized cluster in a state of dynamical equilibrium (c.f. Kent and Gunn). There were however conflicting claims that Coma shows substructure, seen as a clumping of galaxies around the brightest galaxies in the cluster (c.f. Baier, Fitchett and Webster, and Mellier et al.). On the other hand, Geller and Beers 5 a...

Jet-ism Interaction in the Radio Galaxy 3c293: Jet-driven Shocks Heat Ism to Power X-ray and Molecular H2 Emission

We present a 70 ks Chandra observation of the radio galaxy 3C293. This galaxy belongs to the class of molecular hydrogen emission galaxies (MOHEGs) that have very luminous emission from warm molecular hydrogen. In radio galaxies, the molecular gas appears to be heated by jet-driven shocks, but exactly how this mechanism works is still poorly understood. With Chandra, we observe X-ray emission f...
